Ethical Bull Breed Rescue & Referral originated in New England as a network for breed advocates, rescuers & volunteers to get together to help our beloved bullies needing homes in the USA & Canada. The rescue has grown to many different states and hopefully will be Nationwide one day.
Ethical Bully Breed Rescue of Florida was started in the Fall of 2003 by myself, Melody Owens. As a new owner to an American Bulldog, I fell hard for the bullies that no one seemed to want to help - dogs just like my Maui girl who were dying in shelters. After a roommate had adopted an adult AB and then dumped him at another rescue, only to be found again at the local kill shelter a few days later I vowed that I would dedicate my life to saving these dogs. It took hours of begging & pleading with Animal Control to allow me to get this dog, as well as over $150 to bail him out of jail, but it worked, he was finally safe with me. Kona the American Bulldog was my first rescue dog - and boy did I have a lot to learn. I searched the internet for a rescue who would just place him on their website until I could find him a home. That rescue was EBBRR. I found out more about bully rescue and started to do things on my own, and help out as many American Bulldogs & Pit Bulls as I possibly could. Soon after, I decided I wanted to start my own rescue so more people would trust me. I was young, only 19, but knew what I was put on this Earth to do. After two years and one failed attempt at an adoptive home, Kona found his forever family. He's living the good life in Tampa, and we send a great big THANK YOU to his family for giving him the chance to show what a great boy he could be.
Six years after bringing in the first rescue dog we are still a small rescue, but we're strong. We have many excellent people behind us and the power to make things happen for dogs in need. I have met the most wonderful people who have been such a great influence in my rescue journey, and I cannot thank you all enough. Thank you for teaching me & helping me to help these wonderful dogs.
Maui on the left, the girl who opened my heart to bullies and Magnum on the right, rescued the day before he was due to be euthanized in an Orlando shelter. He doesn't know it, but he owes his life to Maui. On Oct 4, 2008 Magnum passed the ATTS Temperament Test, earning him the TT title! To think someone wanted to just throw this dog away. The xext month, Magnum past the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) evaluation and then went on to be tested (and passed) the TDI (Therapy Dog International) evaluation. He's a wonderful dog, and a true breed ambassador!
